So the Denver Police Department has issued a PSA warning parents of the dangers legal marijuana poses to their children’s Halloween candy. In a video featuring zooms and slow-mo candy avalanches that stirringly convey the ominous implications of Gummi Bears and Skittles, the owner of the Urban Dispensary informs us that much of the edible products in his store are made by spraying “knock-off” versions of gummis, Hershey’s Kisses, etc., with hash oil. “There is really no way,” Patrick Johnson explains, “[for] a child or a parent or even an expert in the field to tell you whether a product is infused or not.” He then recommends that parents throw away any candy that appears tampered with or is from an unfamiliar company.
This brings up a few issues:
- Pot edibles is a “field,” and there are experts in it.
- There are assholes pretending bottom-run, generic candy are pot treats. Do we have a new version of greenwashing on our hands? This one would not be remotely as diabolical as the kind exemplified, for instance, by British Petroleum making their logo green, but it’s sad to think of those potheads who lovingly spend hours over stoves making their vegan pot chocolates and the like going out of business because it’s more cost effective for some company to buy pre-manufactured crap and hose it down.
- What kind of fools would spend money on crappy pot candy and then essentially throw it away? Perhaps the same kind of fools who were rumored to be planning the same thing with Ecstasy however many years ago? It makes me wonder if there were warnings in the late ‘70s of candy cigarettes being dusted with cocaine instead of the fine sugar dust you could blow to approximate smoke.
- This is a PSA that warns parents of new dangers and recommends the same behavior PSAs have been recommending since as far back as when it was rumored razor blades were being hidden in apples?
- Do people even give out apples anymore? I hope so. Like a locally-grown Fuji or Honeycrisp or something in my Halloween basket? That would be awesome and good for the ol’ G.I.
- Edibles made not with THC but hash oil? That changes everything.
